(Marxism) (academia) Coined in Trent Schroyer's "The Critique of Domination: The Origins and Development of Critical Theory" (1973) and adopted by later academics (Jameson, Kellner) Cultural Marxism is an accusation towards theorist previously considered to have a Marxist philosophy at base who have since been subsumed by the comforts of Capitalist culture, and can thus be perceived as having given up on the concrete struggles of a more authentic version of Marxism. Schroyer specifically makes this accusation of Lukacs, Marcuse and Habermas among others. The term can be seen as having originated in the radical left, and was never widely adopted by mainstream academia.
