DEBTOR, noun. (legal) One who owes another anything, or is under obligation, arising from express agreement, implication of law, or principles of natural justice, to pay money or to fulfill some other obligation; in bankruptcy or similar proceedings, the person who is the subject of the proceeding.
DEBTOR IN POSSESSION, noun. (finance) (legal) (US) A natural person or corporation that has filed a bankruptcy petition, but remains in possession of property upon which a creditor has a lien or similar security interest. Such a business may continue to operate its business under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
