NEISSERIA, proper noun. A taxonomic genus within the family Neisseriaceae   — proteobacteria that colonize the mucosal surfaces of many animals. The genus includes two parasitic bacteria species, one of which is the cause of gonorrhea, the other a cause of meningitis.
